The original concept for the Blake Street Memorial Board was conceived by Maurie Novak.
Each piece of the board represents a person. The notion of the overlapping pieces, which create the Magen David, is intended to represent the overlapping lives that form our community.
In Maurie's words: “The question that one is faced with when beginning to design a symbolic creation is to question ‘what is its purpose and significance?’
“Families of our lost loved ones already commemorate within their own homes the passing of their loved ones by lighting a candle and saying appropriate prayers, so why is it significant to do so within a Shule as well?
“The answer is community. What the Yartzeit Board represents is a commemoration of a person within a community and the body of people to which they were significant. “A Shule is a congregation of people who support and interact with each other on a daily basis, and the Yartzeit Board is a way of remembering those people whose lives used to cross and mingle with ours, creating the community together.”
